Calicut University Department of Zoology

Department of Zoology came into being as a
Centre of Kerala University at St. Joseph’s College,
Devagiri, Kozhikode in 1963. When the University
of Calicut was established in 1968, the Department
was shifted to the present campus. It was
functioning in a semi-permanent building near the
NH-17, and got shifted to the present permanent
building in 1977. The Department offers postgraduate
course in Zoology (now Applied Zoology)
and research degrees, M.Phil. and Ph.D. Since its
inception in 1963, the Department was offering
Entomology as the special subject at M.Sc. level.
Areas of research include Entomology (Taxonomy &
Biology, Behaviour, Pest Management, Insect
Biochemistry, Physiology and Endocrinology,
Biopesticides), Parasitology, Acarology,
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Toxicology.
About 25 books and more than 770 research
papers have been published by the faculty. A total
of 135 Ph. D. Degrees have been awarded from the
department.

Calicut University Department of Statistics

The Department of statistics was established in
1988 with the major objective of developing it into
a centre of excellence in the region, in statistics and
its applications and to provide facilities for training,
study and research in these areas. Dr. K Kumaran
kutty is the founder professor of the department.
The Department is rooted in philosophy of training
and research that emphasizes the intimate
relationship between University and community
and seeks to promote the criterion of a
scientifically motivated society. Inside the Main
Campus of the University, it is housed in close to
the University main bus stop on the national high
way.

Calicut University Department of Mathematics

This Department was established in the year 1976. The Programmes we offer are
M.Sc Mathematics, M.Phil Mathematics and Ph.D in Mathematics. Department has
produced 9 PhD’s and 27 M.Phil’s so far.
M.Sc Programme of this Department is on Pure Mathematics and many of our
students get selected at various prestigeous Research Institutes like TIFR, CMI,
MATSCIENCE etc. Also a good number of teachers in colleges are former students
of this Department.
Since 1983, every year we have been conducting a prestigious lecture series
programme entitled, “ P.Kesava Menon Memorial Lectures” instituted in the
name of the Eminent Mathematician Late Dr. P. Kesava Menon. This Programme
is conducted as an Expository lecture series on a single theme, normally
consisiting of 5 to 6 sessions spread over 3 days. Several eminent mathematicians
visited our department under this programme including Prof. C.S. Seshadri (FRS).
We regularly conduct programmes with a view to improving Mathematics
Education. One of the important activities in this direction is the Mathematics
Talent Search and Nurture Programme (MTS&NP) funded by National Board for
Higher Mathematics (NBHM). Under this programme around 40 students, who
have just completed their B.Sc, are given training for three weeks on foundations
of Mathematics every year. Several college teachers also get benefited by
attending this programme. This is the 6th year we are running this programme
with the support of NBHM.
Department hosted the 20th Annual Conference of the Ramanujan
Mathematical Society in 2005. Prof. C.S. Seshadri (FRS), Prof. M.S
Reghunathan (FRS), Prof. R. Sridharan , Prof. S.G. Dani, Prof. R. Parimala,
Prof. Manjul Bhargava, all Internationally well known Mathematicians gave
Lecturers at this conference.
As a recognition to our contribution to Mathematics teaching, UGC has selected
our department for the e-content development of the B.Sc Mathematics Course.
We have a separate Department Library with a good collection of books and
Journals. The Library is getting an annual support of Rs.7.5 Lakhs from the
NBHM.

Calicut University Department of Journalism and Mass Communication

The department was established in 1978 with the starting of a one year
graduate course leading to a Bachelor Degree in Journalism (BJ). Subsequently
a two year post graduate programme in Communication and Journalism (MCJ)
was introduced in 1988 to meet the ever growing demand for the professionally
trained in the field of journalism and mass communication. At present the
department serves as a centre for Ph.D. programme in journalism and offers
supervision of research funded postgraduates. Ten research scholars are
pursuing the Ph.D. programme in journalism.
Objectives
The post graduate programme is structured to help students acquire skills
which would enable them to work in different media like newspapers,
magazines, radio, TV, PR department, ad agencies ad also in the areas of
research. Though the emphasis of training is on the print media, the course also
provides an understanding of communications, its evolution, technology and
role in the twenty first century with particular reference to recent developments
in the application of electronic media and information technology. It also offers
an opportunity for an in-depth study through a dissertation in the field of mass
communication
Course content
The four semester programme provides a broad based understanding of mass
communication through a multidisciplinary perspective. It also imparts training
in reporting and editing news reports, features and other specialised techniques
of writing covering the historical, technological and international dimensions.
Other aspects covered by the course includes media laws, development
communication, research methodology, technical writing. A dissertation based
on any approved topic in the field of mass communication is carried out in the
final semester.
Practical training in the form of laboratory news paper and a six week internship
in any media organization in the final semester, wraps up the duration of the
course.
The course, conducted by a combination of lectures, seminars and work shops,
is assessed in each semester through a system of internal and external
assessment. Internal assessment is a continuous process determined by the
faculty member concerned for each subject of study. It is on the basis of
attendance, seminar and practical assignments. External assessment is made on
the written examination conducted by the University at the end of each
semester. Viva-voce in the final semester will also constitute a part of the
external assessment procedure.

Calicut University Department of Chemistry

Department of Chemistry is one of the early departments
established in Calicut University. This department started
functioning in 1968 with an intake of Ph D and M Sc
students. From 1986 onwards the department has been
offering M Phil course also.
At present the department has fourteen faculty members
specialized in all major areas of chemistry, namely
Inorganic, Organic, Physical and Theoretical chemistry. The
department has conducted five national seminars during
the last four years.
S.S.Bhatnagar award winner Professor K.L.Sebastian
(Department of Chemistry I.I.Sc, Bangalore) was a student
and faculty member of this department. The 2007
S.S.Bhatnagar award winner Dr. Ajaya Ghosh (Scientist,
NIIST) also is an alumnus of this department

Calicut University Department of Physics

M.Sc Programme in Physics shall be imparted to
the students for two academic sessions consisting
of four semesters. Candidate will be examined and
evaluated on grade basis at the end of each
semester in the different courses of theory and
practicals as per the credits given again of each
course.
The M.Sc Physics programme will consist of (a) Core
courses (b) Elective courses.
a. The core courses will be compulsory for all
students admitted to M.Sc physics.
There will be 13 core courses covering major
branches of Physics (including practicals and
project) and 4 electives.
The student shall select any elective that is offered
in the respective semester which should fulfill the
minimum requirement of the credit for each
semester such that the total number of credits in
each semester should not be less than 16.

Calicut University Department of Arabic

This Department has been instituted in the year
1974 under the headship of Dr. Syed Ehthisham
Ahmed Nadvi and the Department has been
offering since the inception M.A, M.Phil, Ph.D
courses in Arabic Language and Literature. In
addition to these courses some Diploma and
Certificate courses were also offered by the
Department.
The Department has by these years developed to
be the biggest learning center of Arabic Literature
in South India. It has got a good library with
collection of about ten thousand books. Some of
which are very rare ones and consequently it has
become a referral library for the whole of the state.
The Department has got a faculty strength of one
Professor, two Readers and four Lecturers.
The Department is publishing a quarterly journal in
Arabic by name “Kalikoot” and it has acquired a
reputation among the scholars all over the country
with its well-deliberated literary discussions.
The Department is now switching over to Choice
Based Credit Semester System along with the other
departments of the University.
This Post Graduate Program in Arabic under Choice
Based Credit Semester System is designed with a
view to imparting to the students advanced
knowledge in Arabic Language & Literature. As
different from the traditional M.A Arabic course,
this program lays greater emphasis on the teaching
of and the practical training in the functional use of
Arabic as a modern living language without
ignoring the classical background of the literature.
The modern relevance of the Arabic Language in
the International arena and its importance as a
modern business language has been well
considered in the syllabi. As for the literature, its
modern branches i.e Novel, Short Story, Drama,
Poetry, Modern Prose and Journalistic Style have
been given adequate consideration. As the present
day professional environment has been highly
linked with the knowledge of Computer Packages,
adequate input is made in the syllabi to learn and
practice the same with Arabic software.
